MADISON, Maine - Maine's attorney general says officers involved in a 2017 fatal shooting of a man who killed three people acted in self-defense.The Kennebec Journal reports Attorney General Aaron Frey announced on Tuesday that a review of a July 2017 shooting between Somerset County police officers and a local man shows officers were reasonable in their actions due to the threats posed by the gunman.
Somerset police say 52-year-old Carroll Tuttle shot and killed Lori Hayden, the woman he lived with; Dustin Tuttle, their son and their neighbor Michael Spaulding. He also injured Hayden's brother-in-law, Harvey Austin.
Somerset County Chief Deputy James Ross, Detective Michael Ross and Deputy Joseph Jackson responded to the shootings and confronted Tuttle, leading to a shootout between Tuttle and the three officers. Tuttle died shortly after.
