PORTLAND, Maine — The busiest stretch of Maine's hunting season is approaching as sportsmen head to the woods in search of deer and moose.
The state's "resident only" day for deer hunting is Saturday, and the full season runs from Nov. 2 to Nov. 28. Saturday is also "resident" only day for moose, and the longest stretch of the moose hunt also runs from Nov. 2 to Nov. 28.
Both hunts are the subject of heavy hunting permit cuts this year. Deer have died off due to harsh weather and moose suffer due to parasites.
The deer and moose hunts are ramping up as the bear hunt is winding down. Friday is the final day of the year to hunt bear with dogs. The bear baiting season ended last month.
