The Maine Center for Disease Control (CDC) says it is working closely with the U.S. CDC to monitor the coronavirus.

An outbreak of the respiratory disease was identified in China late last year. The first case in the United States was announced Tuesday in Washington state.

Public health officials are still determining how the virus is spread, but person-to-person contact through coughs and sneezes is a likely factor. The coronavirus has infected more than 800 people worldwide, and more than two dozen people have died.

The Maine CDC says it regularly tests and updates protocols for this kind of global situation.
