Former Bangor Police Chief Winslow Dies

BANGOR, Maine (AP) _ The former police chief for Bangor, Maine, has died after a battle with cancer.

The Bangor Police Department said that Donald Winslow died early Thursday at home with his family by his side. He was 57.

Winslow was the 27th police chief of Bangor for nine years. Chief Mark Hathaway says Winslow served in almost every position in the department after joining in 1979.

WZON-AM reports that Winslow retired in 2007 and was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and later, cancer.

He also served on several nonprofit agency boards and worked to prevent domestic violence.

Hathaway says that Winslow lived, lead the department and faced his health challenges with ``courage, compassion and always with a great sense of humor.''
