FAA Investigates Maine Bi-Plane Crash

STANDISH, Maine (AP) _ The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a bi-plane crash in Standish, Maine.

Maine authorities say 43-year-old pilot William Werth escaped serious injury when his plane crash landed on a road following mechanical problems.

Werth, of Indiana, was headed to the Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday after leaving Northern Aroostook Regional Airport when the plane malfunctioned and he tried to land it on Northeast Road.

The FAA says Werth's bi-plane struck some trees prior to the crash landing. They describe the bi-plane as an ``amateur-built aircraft.'' Werth was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

An FAA spokesman says the investigation is ongoing and declined to comment on any findings.
