Closing Date Coming for Historic Maine Lighthouse

HARPSWELL, Maine (AP) _ The federal government will announce a closing date for its auction of a historic lighthouse in Casco Bay next week.

The Halfway Rock Light Station has attracted four bids so far, with a top offer of $58,000. It is located off Harpswell, Maine, and is an active aid to navigation. An inspection for registered bidders is set to take place on Thursday.

The auction's closing date will get pushed back every time someone posts a bid on the lighthouse. The 1871-built lighthouse is located offshore on a two-acre rock ledge off Bailey Island. It is named Halfway Rock because it is hallway between Cape Elizabeth and Cape Small. The lighthouse's tower is 76 feet tall with an iron dome roof. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
