Maine Student Hunger Task Force Finalizes Recommendations

AUGUSTA, Maine - After meeting through the summer and fall, the state Task Force to End Student Hunger has completed its work and is finalizing recommendations for the Legislature and local school districts.

Portland Democratic Sen. Justin Alfond co-chairs the group. He says, for student hunger to end in five years, it's crucial that eligible students apply.

"What we need to do is look on this as an investment, an investment in making sure school districts have the opportunity to serve meals year round to insure that their students have the best chance to achieve great academic results," Alfond says. "And that is what this task force is after."

Alfond says some of the recommendations will add to local or state costs, but many won't. Most of the funding will come from the federal government.
