Maine DOC Names New Juvenile Services Official

The Maine Department of Corrections has named a new associate commissioner of juvenile services. Colin O'Neill, a licensed clinical social worker, has worked for the department in juvenile treatment for nine years.

DOC Commissioner Joseph Fitzpatrick says O'Neill's selection for the post reflects a push to identify the underlying reasons that young people offend, and create a better chance at rehabilitation by employing proper treatment.

"The trauma issues, and the mental health issues, that many of these young people come to the table with are very significant," Fitzpatrick says. "So I think that's probably the biggest challenge we have on the juvenile side right now, and I think Colin will bring some talent to bear in dealing with some of those issues."

O'Neill holds a degree in psychology from St. Lawrence University and a Master's in social work from the University of New England.
