Former Prosecutor Appeals Child Porn Conviction

BANGOR, Maine (AP) _ Maine's former top drug prosecutor who fled to New Mexico after he was convicted of child pornography charges is appealing his nearly 16-year prison sentence.

The Kennebec Journal reports 52-year-old James M. Cameron's attorney filed notice of the appeal on Dec. 23 in U.S. District Court.

Cameron's sentence of 189 months included two additional years because he sparked a nationwide manhunt when he cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet and fled in 2012 after an appeals court upheld his conviction on seven of 13 counts related to child pornography.

He evaded capture for nearly three weeks before being arrested at an Albuquerque convenience store.

He once led the state's drug prosecutions and served as an assistant attorney general for 18 years before being fired in 2008.
