ELIOT, Maine - A Maine town's police chief is denying accusations that he failed to act after learning most of the town's police officers consistently falsified patrol reports.
The Portland Press Herald reports that Eliot Police Chief Theodor Short says he and a former deputy chief only discussed the possibility that officers lied in reports. He says he was never presented a final investigative report about the issue.
Short's denial comes after Deputy Chief Kevin Cady testified that he presented a 60-plus-page report to Short documenting how he discovered four of the department's six patrol officers repeatedly lied in reports. Cady says the officers claimed they patrolled areas in town while GPS data from cruisers proved they hadn't. Another former officer says he gave Short a memo reminding him of Cady's report.
