King Calls for More Investment in Energy Research

WASHINGTON - Maine U.S. Sen Angus King today told Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz that Moniz's agency needs to do more research on energy technologies. King made the remarks at a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Hearing on the Energy Department budget.

"I don't think we are spending enough on research and development," King said, "and all we have to do is point to the experience of the support for fracking over the last 30 years that has brought us to this energy boom we are enjoying today."

King said more energy efficiency will allow fossil fuels to last longer, providing more time to develop renewable energy technologies.

He said energy costs consume more than one-fifth of the average family's budget, and said lower energy costs will help spur the economy.
