Maine Senators Seek Aid for Snow-Clobbered Washington County

WASHINGTON - Maine U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King have sent a letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency asking for funds to help Washington County recover from the effects of record snowfalls.

Mike Hinerman directs the Washington County Emergency Management Agency. He says what's really atypical about this winter is the relentlessness of the storms, which have been arriving every few days.

"It's not giving the towns a break to get things cleaned up, and the sun to melt things down and lower some of the snow banks," Hinerman says. "It's just piling on top, one storm on top of the other."

In their letter to FEMA, Collins and King say that the back-to-back storms, coupled with the deep cold, have meant that towns are having to take "extraordinary measures" to clear roadways.

Hinerman says some towns will have overspent their snow removal budgets when all the bills are in.
