Wildfire Destroys Home, Barns in Burlington

By Nick Sambides Jr., Bangor Daily News

BURLINGTON, Maine — Crews from several towns are battling a wildfire that destroyed a home, two barns, and two motor vehicles on Long Ridge Road on Wednesday afternoon.

No injuries have been reported.

A house and barn at 1473 Long Ridge Road were destroyed by the wind-blown flames, along with two vehicles parked in the driveway, according to firefighters. No one was home at the time.

The flames crossed the road to 1480 Long Ridge, destroying a barn and threatening the house of Melissa Bowers, who was home baby-sitting her grandchild. Bowers, her grandchild and her two dogs got out of the house, which was not burned thanks to the actions of firefighters.

Winds blowing steadily at 20 mph enabled the flames to spread rapidly to nearby fields and trees, making it difficult for firefighters to gain control of the blaze. Smoke is permeating the scene.

Crews from Burlington, Lincoln, Passadumkeag and East Millinocket are fighting the fire. A helicopter also is dumping water on the flames.

Burlington is in northern Penobscot County, just east of Enfield.
