Firefighters Fear 2 in Rubble After Gardiner Fire

GARDINER, Maine - Authorities say they fear two people may be buried under the rubble following a fire that swept through four buildings in downtown Gardiner.

Fire Marshal Joe Thomas says the two were believed to be tenants of the building where the fire apparently started Thursday. He says they may have lived in apartments where the roof later collapsed.

Officials want to verify that three others who are unaccounted for are safe. Thomas says the three were seen leaving the scene, but officials want to speak to them.

Gardiner Mayor Thom Harnett calls the fire a "community disaster.''

Officials say three firefighters were injured by falling bricks and a tenant was treated for smoke inhalation. The fire displaced a dozen residents.
