AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Chief Justice Leigh Saufley says a proposal would increase the pay for lawyers who represent children in some cases to the same level as lawyers representing adults.
"Simple, straightforward effort to assure that attorneys who represent children in child protective proceedings are paid exactly the same as attorneys are paid to represent adults," she says.
Saufley says it was an oversight that has left those representing children feeling they are less valued than those representing adults.
Saco Democratic Rep. Barry Hobbins, co-chair of the Legislature's Judiciary Committee, agrees and praises Saufley for proposing the legislation.
