Legislature to Consider Firefighting Recommendations in Upcoming Session

AUGUSTA, Maine - A group of lawmakers and representatives of firefighters at all levels are sending along a wide-ranging list of ideas for the Legislature to consider in January, ranging from tax credits for volunteer firefighters to extending workers' compensation coverage.

"We have tried on several occasions, the chiefs, and mostly the volunteer folks and the EMS folks to get that bell-to-bell coverage for their workers," says Jeff Cammack, of the Maine Fire Chiefs Association.

Among the other suggestions is minimum training standards for fire chiefs. Under current law regular volunteer firefighters need to meet minimum training standards, but there are no minimum standards for fire chiefs. The Legislature will consider the recommendations in the January session.
