Legislator Wants to Create Work-Only Drivers' Licenses for Those Not Paying Child Support

AUGUSTA, Maine_ Republican Rep. Mary Anne Kinney of Knox is proposing a for-work- purposes-only driver's license for those parents who have not paid their child support and as a result have lost their driver's licenses. "We have no public transportation per se," says Kinney, "there is an occasional taxi that comes through. But a lot of the jobs are almost an hour away from my constituents' homes."

Kinney says the whole idea behind the threat of a loss of a driver's license is to force parents to pay the child support they owe, so it makes  sense to have a work-only license so parents can get to a job.

Work-only licenses already exist for some convicted of drunk driving and other serious traffic offenses.
