BANGOR, Maine - The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has upheld a ruling by the state's Board of Environmental Protection to reject a $100 million wind power project planned for Penobscot County.
The Portland Press Herald reportsthe proposed project from Boston-based First Wind would've constructed 16 wind turbines generating 48 megawatts of electricity near Bowers Mountain.
Advocacy groups had opposed the project due to its perceived effect on scenic views from nine nearby lakes.
Chief Justice Leigh Saufley's decision highlighted a stipulation in the 2004 Wind Energy Act that stated that projects can't compromise views from scenic resources of state or national significance.
A spokesman for First Wind parent company Sun Edison says they felt the wind project would've brought many significant economic benefits to the region.
