MONTPELIER, Vt. — Statistics show that Vermont continues to be the top state in the country for producing Peace Corps volunteers while Maine and New Hampshire are also in this year's top 10.
Numbers released Tuesday by the Peace Corps show that 52 Vermonters are serving abroad, a rate of 8.3 per 100,000 residents, the highest in the nation. It's the third year Vermont has been the leader.
The statistics show that the Burlington-South Burlington metro area ranked third nationally, with 18 area residents serving as volunteers, also a rate of 8.3 per 100,000 residents.
The state of Maine ranked sixth this year, up three places from last year. The Portland-South Portland-Biddeford region of Maine ranked ninth nationally, the first time the area has made the rankings since 2012
New Hampshire is eighth.
