Contractor's Financial Problems Stops Demolition Work at Bucksport Mill

Demolition work at the former Verso Paper Mill in Buckport has come to a halt because of financial difficulties faced by the contractor hired to do the demolition.

Buckport Interim Town Manager Sue Lessard says she was told by AIM, the company that bought the mill, that DeNovo Constructors is having financial problems and is no longer working on the site.

"AIM is in discussions with the bonding company for DeNovo which guarantees payments to subcontractors and the performance of the work," Lessard says. "They have a conference call scheduled for tomorrow."

Lessard says Bucksport learned of the problems when suppliers started calling the town office this week about not getting paid and having trouble reaching DeNovo. Lessard says the town is concerned that delays in demolition are going to push back any redevelopment of the site.
