Amid Big Changes, Catherine McAuley School Gets New Name

BANGOR, Maine - Maine's only all-girls high school, The Catherine McAuley School, in Portland, will become an independent entity as of July 1. Along with that comes a new name.

"We will now be known as the Maine Girls' Academy," says Head of School Kathryn Barr.

Barr says it's a new era for the nearly 50-year-old institution that recently separated from the Catholic Sisters of Mercy, which had sponsored the institution since its beginnings in 1969.

Barr says the school's mission of educating independent, successful, and service-oriented young women remains the same, but in a secular capacity. "We hope that more and more students will realize the value of an all-girls education. The research certainly backs us up and we are the only all-girls school in Maine."

Barr says students entering the school this fall will have expanded offerings, including a new E-STEAM program, an ethics-infused science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics program.

Many of the traditions, Barr says, will remain the same, including the school colors, mascot, and uniforms.
