York County GOP Head Allowed to Keep Position After Apology

PORTLAND, Maine - The head of the Republican Party in York County will be permitted to keep his position after he apologized for making comments that degraded an openly gay lawmaker in a private email.

The Portland Press Herald reports that the executive committee of the York County Republicans voted Wednesday to not take disciplinary action against county GOP chairman Jim Booth.

Both Republicans and Democrats alike called for Booth's resignation after he referred to Rep. Justin Chenette, an openly gay Saco Democrat seeking election to the Maine Senate, in an email that was made public as "Little Justine.'' Booth went on to urge that someone challenge Chenette in the race to stop "his liberal agenda.''

Chenette says he appreciated Booth's personal apology, but he's disappointed by the committee's decision to retain him.
