Mainers Remember 9/11

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Communities across Maine are pausing to remember the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, that claimed nearly 3,000 lives.
In Portland, Fire Chief David Jackson and Police Chief Michael Sauschuck participated in a wreath-laying ceremony and moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. Sunday at Fort Allen Park. The fire department also was sponsoring a blood drive.
Other activities across the state included an event in Freeport featuring the so-called Freeport Flag Ladies, who've made flag-waving a tradition on Main Street.
Maine is a footnote in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Ringleader Mohamed Atta and accomplice Abdulaziz Alomari flew from Portland to Boston where they joined other hijackers and boarded larger plane that they crashed into the World Trade Center.
