BANGOR, Maine (AP) _ A man who survived nine days alone on Maine's tallest mountain at age 12 in 1939 and later wrote a book about the ordeal has died at age 90.
Family members say Donn Fendler died in a hospital in Bangor on Monday.
Fendler collaborated with Joseph B. Egan on a book, "Lost on a Mountain in Maine,'' and visited schools to tell his story to kids. Two filmmakers are currently working on a feature film.
Fendler said he survived on Mount Katahdin using techniques learned as a Boy Scout. The boy made his way down the mountain and walked through forest to the east branch of the Penobscot River, more than 30 miles from where he started.
Fendler lived in Clarksville, Tennessee, but spent summers in Newport, Maine.
