AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Anyone who loves getting lost in historical documents has a chance to help out the state on a new online project.
The Maine State Archives and Maine State Library are working on a transcription project to make Maine's historical records more accessible with DigitalMaine, which hosts digitized items from across the state.
Users can help by typing the contents of historic documents, which will make them text-searchable.
The goal is to let researchers easily find documents that reference a subject they're interested in.
The project will also make the documents accessible to those who can't read cursive, or those with visual impairment.
State archivists said they hope the public will take on bits of work that would have taken staff years.
