9/11 Memorial Unveiled in Portland

PORTLAND, Maine - Police in Maine have unveiled a new 9/11 memorial containing a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.

Members of the Cumberland County Sheriff's department were joined by the public for the sculpture's unveiling Monday night in Portland. The granite sculpture, which sits outside of the sheriff's office, was donated by the New York City Fire Department.

Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce says he hopes the sculpture reminds Maine residents of everyone affected by the terrorist attacks. The artist who created the sculpture, Gregory Ondo, says he doesn't believe Americans will forget what happened because 9/11 was such a powerful event.

More than 2,700 people dead when hijacked planes slammed into the towers on Sept. 11, 2001. Many more died when hijackers crashed planes in Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.
