Officials Warn April Showers May Bring Flooding From River

Westmanland

Rising waters in Aroostook County are creating concern for residents of Westmanland. Friday afternoon Game wardens used a Maine Warden Service airboat to evacuate one woman from her home and bring supplies to others.

Rising water levels on Madawaska Stream have isolated some people in their homes due to recent rains and warming temperatures. Game wardens say the Little Madawaska Lake Road in Westmanland is now impassible.

A Maine county emergency management director warns the heavy rains of the last few days may also cause the Kennebec River to flood into low-lying areas.

Kennebec County Emergency Management Director Sean Goodwin says residents should plan for minor flooding on Friday. The Kennebec Journal reports the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Kennebec County.

Goodwin says most areas at the greatest risk of flooding are mainly used as parking lots.

It is common for minor flooding to occur in the Augusta area every spring, as rivers swell from melting snow farther north into Maine.
