PORTLAND, Maine - A landlord who was sent to jail in the wake of a deadly house fire in Maine has been released just before the anniversary of the blaze.Gregory Nibset was released on Wednesday. He was sentenced to serve three months for a misdemeanor safety code violation stemming from the fatal Portland blaze.
The fire killed six people. The building, an apartment, caught fire in the early morning of Nov. 1, 2014, after a house party.
Nisbet's attorney, Luke Rioux, tells the Bangor Daily News that his client's release date is "a strange coincidence.''
Nisbet served 70 days of his sentence. Rioux says he was released early for earned "good time.'' Nisbet released a written statement through Rioux on Wednesday that expressed "tremendous sadness'' over the deaths.
