YORK, Maine — A Democrat who represented parts of southern Maine in the Legislature has died.
Democratic legislative leaders say Rep. Paul McGowan of York died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday. He was 67.
McGowan served in the House of Representatives since 2012 and represented Ogunquit as well as parts of Kittery, Wells and York. He founded the Leadership and Learning Center, a leadership development group for people in education, non-profits and other businesses.
McGowan withdrew his re-election bid earlier this summer, citing health issues. The Portsmouth Herald reported that McGowan said he was having mobility problems and was undergoing blood tests.
Democratic House Speaker praised McGowan's work to create a legislative study panel that examined ways to lower the rate of cancer.
