Obama to Rally for Mike Michaud in Portland

By Darlene Superville, The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is headlining a rally Thursday in Portland, Maine, for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud. The six-term congressman is trying to unseat Republican Gov. Paul LePage in next Tuesday's elections, and the race is neck and neck.

Democrats are counting on an Obama visit so close to the elections to encourage Democrats to vote and make the difference for Michaud. Obama is the latest top Democrat to campaign for Michaud, following earlier appearances by first lady Michelle Obama and Obama's former secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Obama is spending much of this final campaign week on the road, appearing with mostly gubernatorial candidates.

His low approval ratings make him a potential liability for many Democrats, particularly senators seeking re-election in states where Obama is unpopular.
