FREEPORT, Maine — Republican presidential hopeful Rand Paul has returned to Maine to rally support in a state where his father found success.
The senator from Kentucky brought his message of smaller government, lower taxes and the need to fight an "unholy alliance" of free-spending lawmakers from both parties to a rally and fundraiser in Freeport.
His father, Ron Paul, visited the same venue in 2012 and carried strong support into Maine's presidential caucuses, where he nearly beat Mitt Romney. The elder Paul's supporters later sent a slate of his supporters to the national GOP convention.
Rand Paul visited Maine in 2014 to speak at the state GOP convention. Republican State Sen. Eric Brakey said Paul's message resonates in a state where libertarians "want the government to get out of their lives."
