Oakland OKs Reading of Law That Would Block Pot Sales, Clubs

OAKLAND, Maine — Oakland officials have approved the first reading of an ordinance that would block marijuana retail stores and social clubs in the town.

The Morning Sentinel reports the town council wants to make Oakland a "dry" town for recreational marijuana to buy time as the state figures out regulations and rules.

Unofficial results from the Maine secretary of state’s office indicated the state referendum legalizing pot for people 21 or older narrowly passed. The vote is being recounted. Most Oakland residents voted against the measure.

Town officials say Oakland can’t enforce a pot moratorium because its comprehensive plan hasn’t been updated and the town doesn’t have zoning.

Town Manager Gary Bowman says officials don’t yet know if the ordinance would take away potential state funding to Oakland.
