Maine Secretary of State Reviewing New Request For Voter Data

Maine election officials have received a second letter requesting voter data from the co-chair of a presidential advisory commission looking into allegations of improper voting and fraudulent voter registration across the nation.

Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, who’s a member of the commission, denied a first request made at the end of June seeking all publicly available voter data. That letter, which went out to all the states, indicated that the information would be made public, something that is against Maine law.

Kristen Muszynski, spokeswoman for the secretary of state’s office, says this latest request indicates the information will not be shared publicly.

“This time around, where they’re saying that they are not looking to make it public, it’s something we’re going to have to review again and see where that falls with the other provisions of Maine law. That’s something that the secretary will be reviewing with legal counsel,” she says.

Muszynski says Dunlap has concerns that this second request for voter data was not discussed at the commission’s first meeting earlier this month. She says the secretary plans to delay his decision on whether or not to provide the data until he and other commissioners can convene to discuss the request.
