Most Augusta Councilors Favor Ban On Marijuana Sales In Residential Areas

AUGUSTA, Maine - A majority of city councilors in Augusta say they are interested in banning medical marijuana caregivers from selling in residential areas. The viewpoint diverges from a city committee recommendation that Augusta should regulate - not ban - marijuana caregivers selling from their homes.

The Kennebec Journal reports the councilors shared their views last week, indicating they don't want to allow sales in residential zoned areas, noting they are in favor of allowing other caregivers to operate in commercially zoned areas.

Mayor David Rollins says the city is within its rights to ban medical marijuana caregivers from residential zoning districts because it is a land-use issue which applies to any business.

Rollins says a ban wouldn't limit the number of caregivers, just their locations.
