"The Country of the Pointed Firs" by Sarah Orne Jewett
The Country of the Pointed Firs is widely considered to be Sarah Orne Jewett’s finest work. A classic novel (some call it a collection of related short stories) set on the coast of Maine, it is a heathery assemblage of vignette, narrative, lore and anecdote of the lives and rhythms of a decaying fishing village. One reviewer, writing in 1903, said of the novel: “Reading The Country of the Pointed Firs is like opening one’s grandmother’s chest of spotless, lavendered linen, or spending a day in a deep forest glade within sight and sound of clear, softly flowing water, the sky blue above the pines and the air shot through and through with Indian summer sunshine.”
