Firefighter Dies, Others Injured Fighting Berwick House Fire

A captain with the Berwick Fire Department has died fighting an apartment building fire in that town earlier today.

Maine Public Safety spokesperson Steve McCausland has confirmed the death of Captain Joel Barnes. McCausland says Barnes and a second fire fighter were on the third floor when they were met by a wall of flames.

"And both men had to be rescued by other fire fighters," McCausland says. "In addition to the second man down on the third floor there were three other firefighters that were injured. All four of those injured fire fighters have now been treated and released."

The fire was reported shortly before 11 a.m. and drew between 50 and 75 firefighters from 12 departments in Maine and New Hampshire.
