Maine Settles Water Quality Dispute With Timber Harvest

The Maine Forest Service says it has entered into a settlement agreement with a timber harvester over allegations about inadequate water quality protection.

The service says the settlement resolves an allegation it made that Maine Custom Woodlands' timber harvesting activities didn't include reasonable measures to protect water quality on land harvested in Pownal. It says that led to deposition of sediment in a local stream.

Maine Custom Woodlands denied the allegations. Ultimately, it agreed to pay $3,000 to resolve the allegation. It also agreed to staff training about best management practices for water quality protection.

Maine Custom Woodlands representatives did not return a call seeking comment.

The forest service says the state has dismissed the lawsuit and released Maine Custom Woodlands and the landowner from all claims.
