LIMINGTON, Maine (AP) _ Police in Maine say a Limington resident out taking a walk found a military grade M-18 smoke grenade Saturday and brought it home, then called authorities.
York County Sheriff William King said deputy Tom Searway went to the man's home and recognized the device from his military service, determined it was live and summoned the Maine State Police bomb squad.
Authorities say an explosives expert safely detonated the device.
King says he appreciates that the resident called authorities, but recommends that anyone who finds a suspicious device leave it where it is and call the police. He said the type of device found on Route 11 Saturday is unstable and it's best to let explosives experts handle it.
