PALMYRA, Maine - The monument to a Maine state trooper who was killed while involved in a car chase in 1980 has been restored and relocated to a more prominent position.Palmyra officials say the restoration of Trooper Thomas Merry's monument was spurred in part by the April death of Cpl. Eugene Cole. News Center Maine reports the restored monument now flanks the Thomas Merry Memorial bridge - which also got an update: new signs to honor its namesake.
The cost of restoring and relocating the monument was entirely funded by community donations.
Local officials will formally rededicate the monument on Saturday.
