Maine's Special Olympics Concludes on Sugarloaf Mountain

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine - Events held as part of Maine's Special Olympics are winding down on the slopes of Sugarloaf Mountain as the 47th annual Winter Games comes to a close.

The Morning Sentinel reports that approximately 403 athletes from 63 teams across the state competed in alpine skiing, snowshoeing, Nordic skiing and speed skating races for the chance to receive a gold medal.

After the events are completed Tuesday, athletes who took first, second and third place will be awarded medals at the Special Olympics podium.

Special Olympics Maine hosts more than 64 events each year to provide the opportunity for athletes with intellectual disabilities to compete in over 28 Olympic sports.

Martha McClure, who has coached in four Winter Games with her team, says the Special Olympics also helps athletes improve socially.
