Sears Island

Advocates for Sears Island gathered in Bangor on Wednesday night to voice opposition to a port on the island, saying the project is less about offshore wind and more about development in general.

Lawmakers overwhelmingly said the proposal would unnecessarily eliminate economic development opportunities for the state.

One proposal would conserve the entire state-owned island from commercial development.

The delegation is traveling to two countries with established offshore wind energy industries at a time when the Mills administration is facing political headwinds while trying to jump-start the sector in Maine.
