Calling it a pervasive blight on our constitutional republic and the world at large, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court has issued a statement decrying racism and other forms of bias.

PORTLAND, Maine - Maine's high court wants to hear from the public on a proposal to hold accountable lawyers who commit harassment and discrimination.

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has formally reprimanded a former York County probate judge who has been punished a number of times for ethical violations.

The Bangor Daily News reports that the ruling involves a decision Robert Nadeau made in a child custody case. Nadeau had ordered a woman to pay $23 a week in child support payments. She claimed Nadeau was retaliating because of posts she had made about his candidacy in an upcoming election. The paper says the woman had asked Nadeau to recuse himself, but he declined.

FREEPORT, Maine - The Maine Supreme Judicial Court is hitting the road this week with sessions in Freeport and Rumford.
 
The court will hear appeals Thursday at Freeport High School and Friday at Mountain Valley High School. The road show wraps up next week at Westbrook High School.
 
The students will get an opportunity to hear real cases. Freeport students will hear a request for post-conviction review based on DNA evidence, and students in Rumford will hear a bid to save the lives of dogs that were ordered euthanized.
 

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has refused to clear an emergency room physician of a woman's claim that he violated her civil rights.  The case dates back to 2007, when the patient, who has mental health issues, was detained against her will at MaineGeneral Medical Center.  As Patty Wight reports, the lawsuit raises questions about physician liability.
