Maine Fish Auction Improvements Underway

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine's largest fish auction is getting a million-dollar face-lift.

Work on the Portland Fish Exchange began earlier this week. The $1 million in improvements to the building is part of a $100 million state bond approved by voters last year. Portland Fish Exchange General Manager Bert Jongerden says the work will replace the building's roof, which is about 25 years old. He says the work will likely be finished by the end of next week. More work on the building is expected in the winter and spring.

Jongerden says Maine groundfishermen rely on the fish exchange and the improvement work will help extend the buildings life by another 20 years.
