Maine's Scallop-Rich Cobscook Bay Remains Open Another Week

LUBEC, Maine — Maine fishery managers say the Cobscook Bay area will remain open for scallop harvesting until at least the end of the month.

State Department of Marine Resources officials say the scallop-rich area will stay open until at least Feb. 25 for draggers and Feb. 28 for divers. The state's other two scallop harvesting zones are also remaining open as scheduled.

State officials say port samplings, industry reports and other sources show that the area has not yet reached the 30 to 40 percent harvest target that would trigger a closure.

Scallop fishing season lasts until April 11 in Maine. This year's season is heavily regulated and includes waterway closures and limits on the number of fishing days and gallons of scallops per day.
