GREAT DIAMOND ISLAND, Maine - Members of the media and others, including Gov. Paul LePage, got a sneak preview of the new Inn at Diamond Cove.
The $12 million hotel project features redevelopment of the largest remaining structure within the Fort McKinley Historic District on Great Diamond Island, which is part of Portland.
In November of 2013, the inn was under construction and less than two weeks from completion when it was destroyed by fire. Hotel operator Chris Hart says the enlisted men's double barracks, which had been vacant for more than six decades, has been developed into a 19,000-square-foot hotel.
"We're happy that the last remaining large building of the Old Fort McKinley has been restored and that it's now in use as a jo- creating facility, tax paying," Hart says.
Hart says the inn will be opening in two weeks, on July 10.
