"Evolution of a Glassblower" - Art Glass by Carter Jones Meyer
“Evolution of a Glassblower,” a new exhibit of art glass by Carter Jones Meyer, will be on exhibit in the Marine Room at the Rockport Public Library August 2-28. Having studied glassblowing at Waterfall Arts Glassworks in Belfast for the past three years, the exhibit documents Meyer’s learning curve as student, fine-tuning fundamental skills and gradually moving into more complex and experimental techniques.
Meyer’s most recent vessels are organic in shape and reflect the inspiration she feels from the natural world she observes in Maine. “The power and beauty of Maine’s rivers, in particular, have had a profound hold on my imagination,” says Meyer. “I’ve also been inspired by paintings in the collections of the Farnsworth Art Museum and by indigenous poetry, most notably by Abenaki poet Carol Willette Bachofner.”
Before her retirement, Carter Jones Meyer was a professor at Ramapo College of New Jersey, where she taught courses in the history of the American West, Native history, and late nineteenth and early twentieth century American history. She has also taught Native history at the University of Southern Maine. She holds the Ph.D. in American Studies from Brown University. Among her post-retirement activities, she serves as a docent at the Farnsworth Art Museum and co-teaches a series of “Virtual Tours” of the Farnsworth’s collections for the University of Maine at Augusta Senior College.
