Pihcintu Multinational Girls Choir & Raising Their Voices in Vienna

"We are here to educate people about what we’ve been through.” The Pihcintu Refugee Youth Choir, comprising 34 girls and young women from refugee backgrounds, sings at the Global Compact on Refugees meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York. ; On 17 December 2018, the member states of the UN General Assembly approved the Global Compact on Refugees that will transform the way the world responds to mass displacement and refugee crises. The agreement, after two years of consultation, will build on the existing international legal system, most notably the 1951 Refugee Convention, to provide stronger support for countries where most refugees live and increase the sharing of responsibility. A record 68.5 million people are currently displaced and 9 out of 10 refugees live in developing countries, where basic services like health and education are already strained. The Global Compact will increase investment from governments and the private sector, promote access to education for refugees, address the environmental impact of hosting refugee populations and seek to create increased resettlement opportunities.

Pihcintu Multinational Girls Choir & Raising Their Voices in Vienna

In today’s troubled world, the Vienna Union Hall is pleased to bring an incredible group of refugee girls and young women to this small town in rural Maine on May 4 at 4:00 PM. Never before has this community had the opportunity to hear the stories of struggle and hope offered with such beautiful voices in this intimate setting.

The group’s soloists have powerful beautiful, and moving voices and are richly talented; they are backed up by rich, precise, and expressive harmonies. Their eclectic repertoire includes traditional folk music, spirituals, and carols as well as songs written expressly by and for the group.

Pihcintu, a Passamaquoddy word meaning “When she sings, her voice carries far” is the name of this unique chorus of young women from Cambodia, China, Congo, El Salvador, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, Viet Nam, British West Indies, and Zambia, along with children whose families have been here for generations.

The Pihcintu Multinational Girls Choir has performed for over 300,000 live and hundreds of millions via broadcast and internet media including National Public Radio, Voice of America, Al Jazeera, Univision, UN TV and You Tube. They have appeared at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington DC, The National Cathedral, Washington, DC and the United Nations to name but a few of the venues. In 2023 the Choir won the Maine Education Association’s 2023 Human and Civil Rights Award.
