Anthony Walton is an acclaimed poet and essayist, as well as the editor and author of several books, including Brothers in Arms: The Epic Story of the 761st Tank Battalion, which he co-wrote with NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Mississippi: An American Journey. In addition, Walton’s poems and essays have appeared in numerous magazines, journals, and anthologies, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and the Oxford American magazine.
For this lecture, Walton will build off the ideas in his latest book, The End of Respectability: Notes of a Black American Reckoning with His Life and His Nation.
Walton is a professor and writer-in-residence at Bowdoin College.

This is a free community event and no tickets are required, but please bring a potluck dish ample enough to share with neighbors and new friends while celebrating the season! Portland’s First Friday Art Walk is a free self-guided tour of art galleries, art studios, museums, and alternative art venues on the first Friday of every month from 5-8pm. Its mission is to open the doors of Portland’s visual arts community by joining together and introducing a wider audience to the unique vitality of the artists and venues of Portland, promoting interest with non-exclusivity and easy-access, thereby strengthening the arts and community through diversity and celebration.

The Book Sale features gently used books, CDs, DVDs and audio books - most priced at 50 cents to a dollar. The sale is held on the third Saturday of every month. All proceeds fund Cary Memorial Library scholarships awarded to Maranacook High School graduating seniors.
