In the decades leading up to the Civil War, it became harder to reconcile the country’s professed ideal that “all men are created equal” with the reality that slavery allowed millions to be held in bondage. One contentious issue was the Underground Railway — a loose network that helped fugitives who were escaping from slavery. Citizens of Portland played a major role in that effort; some of their stories are noted on the markers of the Portland Freedom Trail. Paul Ledman will relate stories of the Freedom Trail to the historical background which made it necessary.
CATS: Young Actors Edition is a shortened adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical, one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. CATS is set amongst a larger-than-life junkyard playground and is alive with purr-fect felines, including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Skimbleshanks and Grizabella. The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year—the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one, they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. Cats is centered around the ideas of redemption, acceptance, and community.
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webberbased on Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot

There are so many reasons to keep honeybees – to support pollinators, for the joy of observing them at work, and for the honey, propolis & beeswax that beekeepers can collect.
Join Master Beekeeper Karen Thurlow for three sessions to help you get ready for your first season keeping bees. She will prepare you for the earliest decisions you’ll have to make when starting out: what equipment to get (and where), how to put together a new hive and where to situate it, and what bees to order and in what “form” (package or nuc). Karen will also introduce you to the lives of bees themselves – what their roles and basic needs are – as well as what you need to look for when inspecting your hive(s), and what each of the four seasons as a beekeeper will require of you.
*This is a 3 part webinar series with sessions taking place on: January 24, January 25, & January 31 from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. All sessions will be recorded & the recordings shared with registrants. We will reserve February 1 as a snow date in case of power or internet outages.
