Tate House Museum Welcomes Lafayette to Means House

Portland—In 1825 the Marquis de Lafayette visited Portland as part of his grand tour of America. We will commemorate the 200 th anniversary of his visit by welcoming professional reenactor Michael Halbert sponsored by the American Friends of Lafayette at the historic home of his friend and comrade James Means.
Participants will gather outside the Means House beginning at 4:30 pm for Lafayette’s grand arrival at 5:00 pm to celebratory fiddle music of the period. He will greet the crowd and all will enjoy Lafayette cake and receive a commemorative gift. A short presentation describing Lafayette’s visit and service with James Means will commence after his arrival. This Lafayette welcome event is free to the public and we invite all who are interested to join us.
From ~5:30- 6:45 pm we will offer a series of short ticketed performances by James Means, wife Mary, and daughter Sophia dressed in period clothing who will reenact the occasion of Lafayette’s visit in the house parlor with live music. Timed tickets for this immersive theater experience are limited and
must be purchased in advance on Eventbrite or on our website tatehouse.org beginning June 13. Cost is $15 per person and includes a photo op with Lafayette and performers in the house parlor where artifacts of the Means family will also be on display.
Informal photos with Lafayette will be offered to the general public outside the house from ~6:45-7:15pm, then we will wave goodbye to our Nation’s Guest. Outside visitors can learn more about Lafayette and his U.S. tour by representatives of the American Friends.

Join Yogi Abi for a Hatha Yoga flow grounded in the principles of AYAMA. Applied yoga anatomy and muscle activation is the teaching philosophy of Abi's teacher, Yogi Aaron. It combines traditional yoga practices with muscle activation techniques proven to strengthen our ability to contract our muscles on demand. Practicing AYAMA will leave you feeling stronger and help to alleviate pain in the body.

This is a drop-in class. Registration is not required. The price per session is $15 (members) or $20 (non-members), which can be paid directly to the instructor via cash or check.

About the Instructor:

Abi was born & raised on Cape Cod Massachusetts. Abi has lived and worked in the greater Ellsworth area for the past four years. In May of 2024 Abi embarked on a journey to Costa Rica to study yoga as Blue Osa yoga retreat on the Osa Peninsula. There she received her 200 Hour yoga teacher training certificate. Yoga has been a big part of her life for many years and she believes that the healing power if yoga is something she is called to share with others through her work.

PREMIERE OF A NEW JAZZ COLLABORATION: “BONE & IVORY: BALCH & JACQUES”

Pianist/vocalist Bess Jacques and trombonist Barney Balch, two leaders of their own respective bands, are joining forces in a new jazz duo collaboration which they call “Bone & Ivory: Balch & Jacques”. They will be giving their first public performance at The Lincoln Hotel (17 Lincoln St., Biddeford, ME; tel. 207-815-3977) on 25 June, 2025 from 5:45-8:45PM. They will be playing a mix of rich, timeless, classic jazz from the Great American Songbook.

Bess Jacques is a Maine-based pianist, singer, and songwriter, performing regularly in the greater Portland area. Her music spans jazz, singer-songwriter, and pop styles, combining vintage standards with fresh originals. Her band, “Bess Jacques and the Strays” has just released a new album, “Anthems for Lily Briscoe” which is available for download on BandCamp and can be heard on Spotify, Amazon Music, iTunes, YouTube, etc.

Barney Balch is a trombonist from mid-coast Maine who leads the Novel Jazz Septet, a tribute band to jazz icons Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. For 21 years, the Novel Jazz Septet has focused on original historic manuscripts by these composers (researched from the Smithsonian Museum of American History and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.) as well as vintage recordings which they dust off, arrange for seven pieces, and bring the sound back to life, but with a 21st century sound, but with a 21st century sound. The band has recorded four albums and performed hundreds of concerts around Maine and New England over the years.

The combination of Jacque’s beautiful, alto voice, and superb piano voicings, along with the smooth, mellow sound of Balch’s trombone is what makes this collaboration entirely unique. The setting for this performance, The Lincoln Hotel, has a lively and elegant lobby bar, replete with grand piano, plus plenty of room to relax and unwind to the sounds of classic jazz. It is situated in a beautifully re-imagined mill in downtown Biddeford. There is also a restaurant in the hotel for your dining pleasure. So come out on Wednesday, 25 June to enjoy a finely-paired beverage with the premier of this exciting new jazz collaboration, “Bone & Ivory: Balch & Jacques!”

New England has long suppressed the memory of its involvement in slavery, just as it has concealed or failed to center the stories of the region's free and enslaved Black and Indigenous populations. How could we have gotten the story so wrong for so long? This interactive presentation will contrast the cherished narrative of Northern exceptionalism and innocence with recent scholarship that reveals a long history of exploitation with which our communities have barely begun to reckon.

On Wednesday, June 25, at 6 p.m., the Rockport Public Library will host the next program in their deliciously educational “foodie” series. Part-time commercial fisherman John Painter will discuss how the New England fishing industry is developing innovative strategies for addressing climate-change-related challenges — specifically, the proliferation of the invasive green crab.

Painter’s talk will be about green crabs; how they got here; what they’re doing here; and why it matters. It’s also a rare opportunity to learn about how the public can pragmatically address global warming while sitting at the dinner table. Samples of food created using green crab will be available for tasting.

John Painter was born and raised in Owls Head, and commercially lobstered before attending college in Washington state. Later he moved to, and worked in, Germany and Hungary before returning to the US to pursue graduate studies at Rutgers. Painter now lives in Lewiston and his primary work is in HUD housing for seniors. He also has a cottage in Owls Head and returned to commercial fishing in 2020. Painter started Maine Green Crabs in 2023, and he fishes green crabs exclusively along the Weskeag River bordering Owls Head and South Thomaston.

A Tincture of Time is a multimedia, psychedelic play based on the author's experiences at a large hospital caring for a baby with significant medical needs. The play repositions the hospital as the important spiritual borderland it is and its personnel as magical practitioners who have access to different dimensions. Like all hospitals, it is not without its faults. This production combines the artistic visions of various artists, performers and musicians to capture the surreal experience of submitting to life in the hospital.
